Marian B. Brown, half of S.F.’s famous twins, dies at 87
While everyone was caught up in Thanksgiving preparations, there was some sad news that broke locally. San Francisco lost the last surviving Brown twin.
Marian and Vivian Brown were spectacular in what they did. That is, surprise and delight passerby’s with their beauty, charm, sameness, and uniqueness. They were celebrities in a city chalk full of characters.
I never personally met the identical twin sisters, but had passed them on the street numerous times over the years. Their star power (and matching outfits) was a sight to behold.
But even from a distance, I recognized their importance and staying power. They were one of the last remaining, notable residents in a city that has changed many times over in their lifetime. The Brown’s embodied the values that made San Francisco a welcoming, yet whimsical, one of a kind city. They will be greatly missed.
(Check them out in action, being charming Chatty Cathy’s at the Westfield Mall back in 1997.)
(In addition to the story of Marian Brown’s death linked above, San Francisco Chronicle Columnist, Leah Garchik, published a reflective piece on their celebrity in Sunday’s paper.)
